China Administrative Divisions

What is the hierarchy of administrative divisions in China?

China’s administrative system is organized into four main levels. At the top are the provincial-level divisions, which include provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the central government, and special administrative regions. Each provincial-level division is subdivided into prefecture-level divisions, such as prefecture-level cities, prefectures, autonomous prefectures, and leagues. These are further divided into county-level divisions, including counties, autonomous counties, county-level cities, districts, and banners. The lowest level consists of township-level divisions, such as towns, townships, ethnic townships, and subdistricts, which are the smallest administrative units in China.

Here’s a breakdown of the hierarchy:

Provincial Level: China is divided into provincial-level divisions, which include provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the central government, and special administrative regions.

Prefecture Level: Each provincial-level division is subdivided into prefecture-level divisions, such as prefecture-level cities, prefectures, autonomous prefectures, and leagues.

County Level: Prefecture-level divisions are further subdivided into county-level divisions, which include counties, autonomous counties, county-level cities, districts, and banners.

Township Level: County-level divisions are further subdivided into township-level divisions, including towns, townships, ethnic townships, and subdistricts. These are the smallest administrative units in China.

Why is building an Administrative Divisions Database complex?

The complexity arises from inconsistent global standards, frequent boundary changes, non-uniform naming conventions (e.g., “suburb” in Australia vs. “county” in the US), and variations in administrative levels across countries. Integrating and harmonizing data from multiple sources requires advanced normalization, versioning, and geospatial validation techniques.

How does GeoPostcodes solve the problem for you?

Our standardized database overcomes the complexity of different administrative division
systems worldwide. Our database follows a unified structure that you can integrate
seamlessly into your system or platform of choice without needing to become an expert in
each country’s unique administrative hierarchy.

124 of the Fortune 500 rely on our international data

Our location dataset for China

China ZIP Codes

China uses a “邮政编码” (postal code) system, which is a six-digit numeric format, like 999999, with no letters or separators. This format is similar to US ZIP codes in that both are numeric, but differs as China’s postal codes have six digits compared to the five digits of standard US ZIP codes, and they do not feature the ZIP+4 extension. According to the GeoPostcodes world postal code database, China has 40,690 postal codes covering 59,683 regions and 1,008,545 towns.

China ZIP & Administrative boundaries

China administrative landscape often follows inconsistent regional models and irregular public sources, making it difficult to maintain reliable boundaries. Our standardized postal and administrative boundary data resolves these gaps to ensure complete, coherent geographic coverage.

China Address Format

Address conventions differ by country, leading to frequent validation errors and incomplete entries. Our dataset applies China correct address format to ensure clean inputs, smoother validation, and reduced delivery mistakes.
